Chelsea are considering Lille’s sporting director Luis Campos as a replacement for the departed Michael Emenalo and met with his agent in London last month to see whether the highly-regarded talent-spotter was willing to be part of the Blues’ summer rebuild.

Emenalo left the club in early November citing a desire to spend more time with his family, but The Independent revealed that he was already in talks with Monaco over a senior role overseeing their sporting operations.

Two weeks later Emenalo was hired by the principality club, filling a role once held by Campos in Monte Carlo, and the Portuguese is now a leading candidate to become the face of Chelsea’s recruitment strategy.

Campos was a scout for Real Madrid during Jose Mourinho’s tenure before moving to Monaco, where he helped recruit a once-in-a-generation crop of talent including Joao Moutinho, James Rodriguez, Bernardo Silva, Djibril Sidibe, Benjamin Mendy and Tiemoue Bakayoko - who is now a Chelsea player.

Key Roman Abramovich ally Marina Granovskaia continues to run the football side of the business at Stamford Bridge while the club assess options to replace Emenalo from the summer.
